Through the Bosphorus Channel
How to make a semi-submersible pass under a bridge in Istanbul: The SSDR Leiv Eiriksson just completed a successful transit through the Bosphorus Channel.

- The operation would not have been a success without the planning assistance from the highly professional team at Inocean, says Jacob Medhaug at Ocean Rig.

Under two bridges

Leiv Eiriksson is scheduled for operations in the Black Sea under a three year contract with Petrobras. To enter the Black Sea, the rig had to pass under two bridges in the Istanbul Strait, also known as Bosphorus. See the spectacular photos here

Scope of work

Inocean has developed reports on different issues for Leiv Eiriksson's transit from Norway to the Black Sea - including everything from mooring calculations on the port side at Ølensvåg outside Haugesund, to calculations of the attainable transit speeds in different conditions, and the required towing force capacity in the most critical part of the transit.

As planned

The transit through Bosphorus started at 0700 AM and was completed at 1400 PM. The average speed during the transit was 6.3 Knots, including a stop for "Ballasting" before the first bridge.

As Leif Eiriksson passed through Bosphours, a ceremony was arranged on land, with the Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz, present.

Leiv Eiriksson will drop anchor off Sinop. Its operations are expected to begin after the tower is re-assembled.
