At 14.40 Thursday the 21st of May the Team Inocean Sailing crossed the finish line in the Helly Hansen Skagen Race 2009 as number 78 of 280 boats.
The race started in Aasgaardstrand at 20.40 the day before, in cloudy weather and 5 ms from south-west. The Inocean crew with Elin Kristiansen, Reidar Berthelsen, Thomas Eckey, Jon Erik Borgen, Geir Grimsrud, Nils Erik Werenskiold, Johan Lassen-Urdahl and Simen Grimsrud got a good start as the fleet headed east.
Rough sea
Soon the wind picked up quiet hard, and together with the rough sea, the leg from Aasgaardstrand to Vaederoarna just outside Goteborg, became a tough experience for the crew. Still, at this point of the race, NOR 12700 was top 10 in its class.
Which sail?
The fleet continued downwind to the next official mark at Brofjorden near Lysekil. Just before turning, at 05.30, the Inocean team changed to a smaller sail before going upwind the last leg to Skagen.
Wind dropped
The wind was still good, and according to the plan, the boat should reach the finish line at about 11.00 the same day. But then the wind dropped. Frustrating 2-3 hours of drifting followed - enough time to watch several other boats passing only a few miles west.
18 hours on the water
At almost three o'clock Inocean passed the finish line in Skagen after 18 hours on the water - several of the crew being sea sick most of the time!
In its class Inocean headed number 19 of 50 boats, less than one hour after the number 3 boat.
Next race for NOR 12700 is Larvik Race Weekend in June.
